Zaheer Khan credits Rohit Sharma for Jasprit Bumrah’s success in first innings of 2nd Test

Indian captain Rohit Sharma‘s strategic brilliance came to the forefront during the ongoing Test against England in Visakhapatnam, earning praise from former pacer Zaheer Khan for his proactive decision-making.

The pivotal moment occurred on Day 2 when Rohit made a game-changing move by reintroducing fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah into the attack immediately after dismissing Zak Crawley.

Zaheer Khan, speaking to Cricbuzz, commended Rohit’s game awareness. “Rohit Sharma’s decision to reintroduce Jasprit Bumrah was a smart move. After dismissing Zak Crawley, Rohit acted quickly, realizing that Joe Root had just come in, and Ollie Pope had caused trouble in the previous innings. Bringing in the best bowler was the plan, creating an opportunity, and Bumrah responded perfectly to that chance,” he said.

Despite Bumrah conceding boundaries in his earlier spell, Rohit’s decision paid off spectacularly. In his second spell, Bumrah displayed his prowess by dismissing Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, both caught by Shubman Gill in the slip cordon. Between these dismissals, Bumrah delivered an exquisite inswinging yorker that dismantled Ollie Pope’s stumps.

Zaheer Khan sensed the breakthroughs as Bumrah commenced his second spell, emphasizing the bowler’s rhythm and ability to capitalize on swinging conditions.

“When Bumrah began that spell, it was evident that something significant would unfold. With reverse swing in play, we are well aware of Bumrah’s capabilities when there’s any swing on offer,” he added.

Bumrah’s exceptional spell of 6/45 not only showcased his skill but also propelled him to become the fastest Indian pacer to reach 150 Test wickets, second only to Asian pacer Waqar Younis. The result of this outstanding performance has put India in a commanding position with a substantial first-innings lead of 143 runs.
