Younis Khan refused to work with Pakistan and joined Afghanistan for Champions Trophy 2025: Rashid Latif

Afghanistan went past England’s challenge by 8 runs in the Group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This was their second win over the English team in the ICC tournaments, with the first coming in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Ajay Jadeja was their mentor back then, and now Younis Khan has similar responsibilities. Both legendary players didn’t charge the Afghans.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Khan has revealed that Younis rejected Pakistan and joined Afghanistan for the ICC tournament.

“Younis Khan refused to work with Pakistan and joined Afghanistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. He is not charging them for his services,” Latif said on the Geo News show ‘Haarna Mana Hai.’

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive Naseeb Khan spoke about bringing Younis Khan on board as a mentor.

“The Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, so we needed someone from the host country to mentor our players. We already achieved good results by appointing mentors from the hosting countries in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup,” he said.

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo worked with Afghanistan during the T20 World Cup in 2024. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s next match in the CT is against Australia on Friday. If they beat the Aussies, they will make it to the semifinals.

Their head coach, Jonathan Trott, is confident of seeing his players giving their best against the Steve Smith-led team. “We have played thrice against Australia, and we know about their style. I said before that you can’t take Afghanistan lightly. We play every game to win,” he said.
