A recent study conducted by SlotsUp examined 20 of the most popular cruise lines operating globally, revealing which ones consistently receive negative reviews for various reasons.
Although cruises are typically seen as a relaxing escape offering both adventure and convenience, some cruise lines fail to meet the high standards that many travellers expect.
The research team reviewed thousands of negative ratings marked as “Poor” or “Terrible” on Cruise Critic, a well-respected cruise review site owned by TripAdvisor since 2007, to identify the main causes of dissatisfaction.
Their findings showed that certain cruise lines are frequently criticised for overcrowded facilities, poor customer service, and overall disappointing experiences.
Costa Cruises topped the list of poorly-rated cruise lines, with 39.16 percent of its reviews being negative. Out of 1,532 total reviews, 600 were classified as “Poor” or “Terrible.”
Passengers often mentioned issues like overcrowding, insufficient amenities, and inconsistent food quality.
One reviewer aboard the Costa Diadema during a Baltic Sea cruise shared their experience, claiming: “Save yourself, literally, and just don’t book with Costa unless you want an overcrowded experience with food poisoning, a disrespectful reception, negligent safety, dirty rooms, towels and bed lining.”
Another traveller opined: “Avoid Costa Cruise at any cost! The most despicable and dishonest cruise line that we’ve ever experienced after sailing around 60+ cruises with other lines. It was our first cruise trip with Costa, and for sure, it would be the last and only one!”
Despite its reputation as an affordable choice for European cruises and beyond, Costa Cruises has failed to meet the expectations of many passengers.
On a more positive note, popular YouTuber Simon Wilson shared his own experience after a three-day cruise on the Costa Fascinosa, claiming: “If you’re looking for a luxury holiday, this probably isn’t it – but if you want value for money, and to get £200 worth, it’s definitely up your street.”
MSC Cruises also received a significant amount of negative feedback, with 32.76 percent of its 10,358 reviews marked as poor. Known for its large fleet and wide-reaching itineraries, the Swiss-Italian line struggles with communication, particularly during disembarkation.
One Cruise Critic reviewer shared, “Disembarkation was a disaster! There is zero communication! They had the walk-off passengers line up shoulder to shoulder for over three hours before seeing movement. People were jammed in stairwells for three hours! It was the worst experience ever after the 37 cruises I have been on!”
British cruise line Ambassador, though newer on the scene, faced 28.57 percent negative ratings from its 147 reviews. While the review count is smaller, there is a high percentage of dissatisfaction.
