Afghanistan have finally achieved what they were looking for years. After failing to beat Australia in the global tournament in 2023, the sub-continent team completed the task in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The 21-run win over the Aussies in the Super 8 stage has opened Group A, with all the teams in fray for the two semi-final spots.
Former West Indies player Dwayne Bravo is associated with the Afghanistan team as a mentor and he has played a key role in his team’s success. Rashid Khan-led unit had thumped New Zealand in the group stage and crossing the line against Australia was even more special.
Afghanistan cricketers paid tribute to Bravo while going back to the team hotel after memorable win. Bravo’s famous song champion was played in the bus and the Afghan players were seen dancing.
Afghanistan posted just 148/6 despite a 118-run partnership between the two openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zardan. They hit fifties.
Gulbadin Naib took 4 wickets while Naveen Ul Haq dismisses 3 batters as Australia were bowled out for 127 in 19.2 overs.
