Virat Kohli will open the innings for Team India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blue will take on Ireland on June 5 in New York. Tne pitch had spongy bounce during the warm-up match between India and Bangladesh.
It was difficult for the batters to play shots with bowlers getting help from the track. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya were the only willow holders, who looked comfortable.
Rohit Sharma’s team defeated the rivals by 60 runs, with Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube taking two wickets each. Virat was rested due to late arrival in the States.
Former India player Mohammad Kaif said that Virat’s role will be important in the campaign opener.
“We saw what happened in the warm-up match. The pitch was not good for batting as there was spongy bounce. I am expecting similar surface in the game against Ireland.
“Virat will open the innings as he likes to play strokes in the powerplay overs. His role will become important after field restrictions are lifted. Kohli’s running between the wickets will work in India’s favour as ones or twos can put the pressure on rivals,” Mohammad Kaif said on Star Sports.
