Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Virat Kohli has broken his silence on a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium, which killed 11 people and injured 33 during the team’s first IPL trophy celebrations on June 4. It was suppose to be a special day for the supporters but the situation turned chaotic, with the police personnel failing to control the situation.
Kohli shared RCB’s official statement and wrote absolutely gutted.
The celebrations were cut short and only RCB captain Rajat Patidar and top performer Kohli gave speeches before showing the trophy to fans inside the stadium. “At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted,” Virat Kohli wrote on Instagram.
Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma used heartbreak emojis.
RCB legend AB de Villiers also reacted to the incident. He wrote, “My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the tragic events at the Chinnaswamy stadium today.”
All about RCB celebrations
The RCB players paid a visit to the Vidhana Soudha to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. They were felicitated by Karnataka CM before the convoy headed to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
However, before their arrival at the venue, a stampede broke out, killing 11 people. Despite the tragic incident, the celebrations continued inside the ground.
Kohli and Patidar spoke about the success and contributions of the fans.
Hours after the incident, RCB issued an official statement.
“We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.”
RCB had won the IPL 2025 title after defeating Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the final in Ahmedabad.
