The domestic market tanked on Friday, dragged largely by IT underperformance tied to TCS Q1 results. Market expects indicate that with global trade uncertainties, rising oil prices, and corporate earnings dominating the landscape, the next few days could see heightened volatility.
Sensex traded 696.91 pts or 0.84 per cent lower at 82,493.37 as at 1.12 pm, close to an intraday low of 82,451.50, and Nifty 50 depreciated 200.30 pts or 0.79 per cent to 25,154.95.
The volatility index rose 2.03 per cent to 11.91. Smallcap index declined 0.84 per cent and midcap index dropped 0.74 per cent.
On the sectoral front, a majority of them traded 1-2 per cent lower, including Nifty IT, Nifty Auto, Nifty Defence, Nifty Media and Nifty Oil & Gas. Pharma and FMCG stocks staged resilience.
Top gainers & losers intraday
Hindustan Unilever, SBI Life, Axis Bank, Nestle and IndusInd led the gainers of Nifty 50, while TCS, Apollo Hospitals, M&M, Wipro and Bajaj Auto were the major laggards.
TCS shares fell 3 per cent following Q1 results. Meanwhile, HUL shares soared 5 per cent. The company introduced Priya Nair as its next managing director and chief executive officer from August 1, 2025.
In addition to these top movers, Glenmark Pharma and Anand Rathi also weighed against the market fall.
Midcap & smallcap movers
After Glenmark, NTPC Green, Alkem, Mankind Pharma, KPIT Tech, and Vishal Mega Mart emerged as major gainers of midcap index, while IRDEA, BSE, Policy Bazaar, Max Health, Waaree Energies, Premier Energies and Tata Elxsi depreciated.
In the smallcap segment, Ramco Cement, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Anant Raj, Sagility soared, and Amber, BEML, CAMS, Kaynes and MCX declined.
Nearly 1,813 stocks declined and 928 advanced of all the 2,827 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing.
These shares hit 52-week high and 52-week low
ACME Solar, EID Parry, Glenmark Pharma, Cartrade, JP Power and JK Cement featured among the 44 stocks that hit a 52-week high. Jindal Poly Films and Jindal Worldwide were among 21 stocks that hit a 52-week low. In addition, 61 stocks hit the upper circuit (including Glenmark) and 31 hit the lower circuit.
All IT stocks traded in red, TCS being the major loser. OFSS, Wipro, LTIMindtree, Coforge, Infosys, Persistent Systems, HCL Tech and Mphasis followed with 1-3 per cent decline.
Among the defence index, BEML, GRSE, Zen Tech, Data Patterns, Solar Industries and Mazagon Dock dragged over 3 per cent.
On the BSE, Glenmark rallied 14 per cent at the time of writing. Netweb, VST and HUL soared 5-8 per cent. On the losing side, PC Jeweller, IREDA, VMART and Hitachi Energy fell 4-6 per cent.
