“Three-match series should decide the result of the World Test Championship Final”: Nathan Lyon

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon wants to see a three-match series to decide the outcome of the World Test Championship Final. The 2023-25 WTC final will be played at the Lord’s from June 11 to 15.

The WTC was started in 2019 to make the Test format more interesting and exciting for the players and the fans. New Zealand defeated India in the final in 2021, and Australia outclassed the Rohit Sharma-led team in the 2023 final.

“I want to see the WTC final in a three-match series. This would be better as a team can lose a Test match in one session and the three-match series will allow the teams to bounce back. I know the schedules are tight, and that is going to be a challenge, but that is one thing I would change,” he told the official website of the ICC.

Lyon further said that India, Australia and England could host a match each for the WTC final, even if logistics becomes an issue.

“You could play in England, one in India and one in Australia. You will have three different conditions to counter but the timings of that changes everything. You can’t play a Test match at MCG in August,” he added.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had earlier called upon the authorities to make as WTC Final a three-match affair.

In the 2021-23 WTC cycle, Lyon took 88 wickets at an average of 26.12 in 20 Tests.

“WTC is like a World Cup for me”: Nathan Lyon.

Nathan Lyon doesn’t play white-ball formats for Australia amd considers WTC like a World Cup for himself.

“World Test Championship is like a World Cup for me. When you play against the best teams for two years, you have to be consistent for the whole lot. It is not like that you lose two games but still manage to make it to the semis. You need to give good performances over two years to make it to the final.”

Australia are second in the WTC standings and will take on India in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting from November 22.
