This 1990 Mazda MX-5 Is Probably The Closest Thing To A Factory Fresh NA

  • A first-generation Mazda Miata with just 4,810 miles has been listed for auction.
  • The one-owner model was stored in New Mexico and remains in pristine shape.
  • Power comes from a 116hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a 5sp manual.

If you’re a keen driving enthusiast looking for a car that’s fun and will make you feel like a driving god, it’s hard to go past the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata. One example is currently up for auction in the US and is likely one of the lowest-mileage first-generation Miatas in the country.

The car is a 1-owner example finished in Classic Red that’s been kept in New Mexico since new. Despite the Miata’s brilliance as a driver’s car, the owner has only ever covered 4,810 miles (7,740 km) in it. While that’s a crying shame, it does present a unique opportunity for anyone looking to experience what made this car such an icon.

Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 116 hp and 100 lb-ft (136 Nm) of torque. Of course, this engine routes power to the rear wheels through a slick five-speed manual transmission. By modern standards, figures like 116 hp and 100 lb-ft are easy to dismiss. However, the NA Miata only weighs around 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg), meaning it’s probably the closest anyone could get to driving a big go-kart on the road without forking out the money for a Lotus.

Given the incredibly low mileage, it’s no surprise that it looks to be in excellent condition. The bodywork is free of any significant damage, and it still has the original 14-inch steel wheels, factory body-colored hardtop, and the folding fabric soft top. The interior is classic MX-5, but for the most part, it’s aged quite gracefully. The cloth seats are also free from any significant signs of wear.

The current Mazda MX-5 is just as fantastic as the original is to drive, but there’s something special about seeing an NA model with so few miles under its belt. If you can see yourself owning the car, head over to Cars & Bids before it’s too late.
