Sunil Gavaskar is optimistic about India’s maiden Test series victory in South Africa

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed confidence in India’s chances of celebrating the New Year with a historic series win over South Africa at their home. Despite a challenging track record in South Africa, Gavaskar believes India holds the upper hand in the current series.

India, having won just four out of 23 Tests in South Africa, faced another setback as Kagiso Rabada’s five-wicket haul disrupted their batting order. At the end of Day 1, India could only post a total of 208/8.

Gavaskar however acknowledged the Protean batters’ lack of form, emphasizing India’s opportunity to capitalize on this weakness.

“I believe India has a good chance because South Africa is not the same, and their batters are not in top form. This provides India with a great opportunity to secure a victory in this game,” he said on Star Sports.

“The Indian batsmen, in contrast, have been in excellent form throughout the matches. With the added advantage of experience from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have played here numerous times, it’s evident that India will mark the New Year with a victory,” he added.

Virat has scored 757 Test runs in 15 innings with an average of 50.46 in South Africa. He scored his highest score of 153 against the Proteas at Centurion in 2018.

In conclusion, Sunil Gavaskar’s optimism stems from India’s advantageous position in the series against South Africa. With the Protean batters struggling and India’s key players in prime form, there is a strong belief that India may clinch their maiden Test series victory in South Africa, providing cricket fans with a memorable start to the New Year.
