On the opening day of the Galle Test, Bangladesh made a strong statement, thanks to a superb unbeaten partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim. The pair added 247 runs, taking Bangladesh to 292 for 3 at stumps after a shaky start.
Sri Lanka made early inroads, claiming three quick wickets within the first hour and reducing Bangladesh to under 50 runs. The Galle pitch, traditionally tough for batters, offered a rare advantage this time. Despite winning the toss and opting to bat, Bangladesh struggled with early setbacks.
When Mushfiqur came in to join Shanto at the crease, the latter had faced just a few deliveries but soon settled into a comfortable rhythm. He signalled his intent with a powerful shot off debutant Tharindu Rathnayake, and the partnership flourished from there.
Shanto remained not out at 136 by the end of the day, with Mushfiqur contributing 105 not out in support.Their sharp running and aggressive yet controlled play kept the Sri Lankan attack at bay.
By the end of day one, Bangladesh were in a commanding position.
On Day 2, Bangladesh are currently at 383/4, with Najmul Hossain Shanto having scored a brilliant 148 before being dismissed. Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 141, alongside Litton Das, who has 43.
