Former England captain Michael Vaughan took a dig at the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for keeping Shreyas Iyer out of the T20I team. He commented after the batter scored an unbeaten 97 runs off 42 balls against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. He hit 9 sixes and 5 boundaries, and his runs came at a strike rate of 230.95.
He could have completed his maiden hundred in IPL but allowed Shashank Singh to face all six deliveries in the last over of his team’s innings. Shashank hit Mohammed Siraj for five fours and took a double to take the score to 243/5 in 20 overs. Iyer told his teammate to go for the boundaries instead of thinking about his century.
Shreyas got a raw deal from the national selectors after he opted out of one of the Ranji Trophy matches in the 2023-24 season. He was not given a central contract and lost his place in the national team.
The right-handed batter was recalled to the side for the 2023 ODI World Cup and scored over 500 runs. Despite his magnificent batting, the team management was not willing to include him in the Playing XI in the three-match ODI series against England.
Virat Kohli’s knee injury gave him a chance to show his class in the first game, and he hasn’t looked back since then. Iyer was Team India’s highest run-getter in the successful campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Despite the batter solving his weakness against the short-pitched balls, the decision-makers continue to ignore him for the shortest format and Test cricket. However, if he scores consistently for Punjab Kings in the 18th season of the league, it would be tough to keep him out.
Meanwhile, Vaughan took to X and wrote: “Just to let you all know @ShreyasIyer15 isn’t in the Indian T20 side,” he wrote.

PBKS bought Iyer for INR 26.75 crore and appointed him as their captain for IPL 2025.
