Overview:
Bumrah has claimed 14 wickets in three Tests at an average of 26.00, making him India’s joint-top wicket-taker in the series against England.
Aakash Chopra has said that Jasprit Bumrah might not feature in all the Test matches of a series in the future. However, Chopra feels Bumrah should not retire from the format, emphasising that he could still play a key role even if he only appears in a few matches.
Before the beginning of the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Bumrah had stated that he would participate in only three of the five Test matches. Having already featured in three of the first four matches, it is still uncertain if he will be part of the final Test, which begins on Thursday, July 31, at The Oval.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, ‘Aakash Chopra,’ the former India opener was questioned about whether Bumrah should contemplate retirement from Test cricket if his body can no longer handle the physical demands of the format.
“Before the series began, it was already decided that Bumrah would play only three Tests. If he sticks to that plan and doesn’t take the risk of playing the fifth, especially knowing there’s no cricket for the next month, it’s clear that his involvement will be limited,” Chopra said.
“With Jasprit Bumrah, it’s going to be a case of picking and choosing, and that’s perfectly fine. I believe he should play as long as he’s able to. For example, in a four-match series in India, it shouldn’t be the case that he doesn’t play any just because he can’t play all four. That wouldn’t be right. Given the kind of bowler Bumrah is, if he plays two out of the four Tests, I’d be fine with that, knowing he’s contributing in those two,” he added.
Bumrah has claimed 14 wickets in three Tests at an average of 26.00, making him India’s joint-top wicket-taker in the series against England. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who has played in all four Tests, has also taken 14 wickets.
