Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of Team India, has highlighted the need to respect Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket before the upcoming tour of England. Some of the former players and fans are questioning the timing of their decision.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli encountered challenges during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar series in Australia. Rohit, with just 31 runs in the three matches, opted out of the final Test, while Kohli, despite a century in the opener, struggled against the Australian pacers. While reports suggested that the BCCI urged Kohli to reconsider his call.
Gautam Gambhir emphasized that retirement is a personal decision and should not be influenced by outside pressure.
“Retirement is a personal choice. No one has the right, whether it’s the coach, the selector, or anyone else in this country, to dictate when someone should retire. It’s a decision that comes from within,” Gambhir told News 18.
There was a general belief that the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would be crucial in English conditions during the important series.
However, Gambhir believes that this presents an opportunity for young players to show their talent.
“We’re now without two key senior players. But I think this is a chance for young players to step up and prove they’re ready. It’s going to be challenging,” Gambhir remarked.
“When Jasprit Bumrah was absent, I said something similar. When someone is missing, it gives another player the chance to make a difference for the country. Hopefully, others are ready for that moment,” he concluded.
