Sandeep Lamichhane alleges ‘conspiracy’ after eight-year jail sentence in rape case, set to challenge the verdict in a higher court

On January 10, Kathmandu District Court in Nepal announced the much-awaited verdict on Sandeep Lamicchane’s case, where they found the leg-spinner guilty and ordered an eight-year sentence in prison.

In the latest events, the police have arrested Sandeep in Kathmandu. Meanwhile, Nepal Cricket Association issued a press release where they suspended the 23-year-old from international and domestic cricket in Nepal.

“We inform you that Sandeep Lamichhane has been suspended from any kind of domestic and international cricket activities as he has been convicted and sentenced.”

Meanwhile, Lamichhane has pleaded not guilty and reiterated his earlier stance that there has been a conspiracy against him. Lamichhane’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire stated that the cricketer would appeal the decision in a higher court.

For the ones unaware of the case, an arrest warrant was issued last year against Sandeep for raping a 17-year-old woman in Nepal. Following the sentence, a 3,00,000 rupee fine has also been imposed on the spinner, besides a compensation of 2,00,000 to the victim.

Sandeep has had an illustrious career with Nepal. The 23-year-old also held an IPL contract from 2018-20, where he represented Delhi Capitals.
