Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has admitted that seeing Prithvi Shaw going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction was sad. The right-handed batter kept his base price at INR 75 lakh but didn’t get any bid despite his name being called out twice in the auction.
Shaw was with the Delhi Capitals in the past three seasons, with Ponting as the franchise’s head coach. He showed a lot of promise in the early stages but lost momentum and was dropped from the playing XI. He was also not retained for the next three-year cycle.
He has been involved in many controversies and was removed from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team after failing to attend practice sessions.
“It is sad. He is still a talented player. He went unsold in the auction despite getting two chances. There were a lot of teams that were looking at him. He is not playing. The game catches up with you. That’s all you can say,” Ponting said via The Business Standard.
Shaw has been facing intense criticism on social media, and former Australia player Greg Chappell recently wrote a letter to motivate and inspire him.
“Trolling is not always good. I have seen memes on me and it sometimes hurt,” Shaw said on the Focused Indian YouTube channel.
He is currently playing for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
