Ravi Shastri reveals key conversation that transformed Jasprit Bumrah’s Test career

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently shared insights into the transformation of Jasprit Bumrah from a white-ball specialist to a formidable Test bowler, revealing a crucial conversation that set the stage for the latter’s Test cricket journey.

Acknowledging Bumrah’s potential in Test cricket along with then-captain Virat Kohli, Shastri envisioned him as a key asset for overseas triumphs. Bumrah, initially making waves with his variations and lethal yorkers in limited-overs cricket, expressed a strong desire to hold the red cherry and flourish in the longer format.

“I recall our first conversation in Kolkata. I asked if he’d like to play Test cricket. He responded, saying it would be the most significant day of his life. He had been tagged as a white-ball cricketer without his input. However, I sensed his hunger. I urged him to prepare, telling him I planned to unleash him in South Africa. His eagerness to play Test cricket with Virat Kohli was notable. In the grand scheme, nobody recalls white ball averages, it’s your Test cricket numbers that linger in memory,” Shastri said in an interview with Hindustan Times.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Test debut during the 2018 South Africa tour’s first Test in Cape Town left an indelible mark. He secured four crucial wickets in his first. His memorable five-wicket haul at The Wanderers in the subsequent Test underscored India’s historic victory, marking the beginning of his journey as a linchpin in India’s seam-bowling contingent.

Since then, Bumrah has consistently showcased his prowess in red-ball cricket, becoming pivotal in numerous overseas triumphs, notably in Melbourne, Nottingham, and Cape Town. His remarkable performances highlight his significance in India’s success abroad, solidifying his stature as a premier fast bowler for the Men in Blue.

Bumrah’s journey is an inspiring tale of perseverance and adaptability, marking a significant shift in Indian cricketing dynamics. His evolution from a white-ball cricketer to topping the ICC’s Test bowling rankings is a testament to his determination and the strategic vision of Shastri and Kohli.
