Equity benchmark indices advanced on Monday as experts believe that the country becoming the fourth largest economy in the world would be a near-term morale boosting the market. The volatility index rose 4.78 per cent to 18.11.
Sensex traded 406.23 pts or 0.50 per cent higher at 82,127.31 as at 12.18 pm off the day’s high of 82,492.24, and Nifty 50 gained 125.15 pts or 0.5 per cent to 24,978.30. Sectoral indices except media and PSU Bank traded in the positive territory intraday, led by auto, defence and IT indexes.
Midcap indices performed well over smallcap.
On global front, US President Donald Trump announced he will postpone the recently proposed 50 per cent tariffs on the European Union to July 9.
On the domestic front, RBI had announced ₹2.69 lakh crore dividend to the Government for FY25, 27.4 per cent higher than 2023-24, aiding the exchequer to tide over challenges posed by US tariffs and increased spending on defence due to the conflict with Pakistan.
Meanwhile, investors will have an eye on India’s Q4 GDP data due on May 30, 2025, and the RBI’s policy decision on June 6, 2025.
Top gainers & losers today
Shares of Bajaj Auto, Hero Motocorp, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and Nestle India traded as top gainers of Nifty 50, while Eternal, JSW Steel, Sun Pharma, Grasim and UltraTech Cement traded as major laggards.
Eternal/ Zomato shares fell over 4 per cent on weightage cuts by FTSE Russell and MSCI.
JSW Steel also declined over 1 per cent post Q4 results.
Among smallcap, BEML, IFCI, KEC International, BLS, Inox Wind, and ACE shine, while HUDCO, Solar Industries, Suzlon, Paytm, RVNL and ATGL soared among midcap. Nifty defence index rose over 1 per cent, with BEML, Data Patterns, Solar Industries and Mazagon Dock rallied 3-10 per cent.
Shares in action
A total of 2,816 stocks traded on the National Stock Exchange, of which 1,771 advanced and 960 declined. About 109 stocks including Cosmo First, Aditya Birla Money and Nibe hit the upper circuit, while 55 traded in lower circuit.
52 stocks including City Union Bank, Divi’s Laboratories, ITD Cement, HDFC AMC, HDFC Life, ICICI Bank and JK Cement hit 52-week high and 21 hit 52-week low.
On the BSE, shares of Shilpa Medicare, BEML rallied nearly 12 per cent. BEML reacted to Q4 numbers. ITD Cementation, Vaibhav Global and Netweb shares zoomed over 7 per cent.
On the flip side, Sardaen, Balkrishna Industries, Honasa, Reliance Infra and TeamLease depreciated 5-6 per cent.
In addition, shares of NTPC, Transrail and Salzer Electronics has been in focus today following Q4 results. Companies like Gillette India, SUMITOMO CHEMICAL INDIA, General Insurance Corporation of India, KEC International, Brainbees Solutions, Blue Dart Express, Akums Drugs Pharmaceuticals and more are set to announce Q4 numbers today.
