Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has emphasised that coaching is an incredibly demanding role. Due to this, Chopra believes that MS Dhoni may not be interested in taking up a coaching role, even if it becomes available.
The Indian team has seen mixed outcomes under head coach Gautam Gambhir, and with Dhoni still playing for Chennai Super Kings, it seems unlikely that he would step into a coaching position.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Chopra was questioned about the possibility of Dhoni taking on the role of head coach for the national team. He acknowledged that it’s a possibility, but only if Dhoni decides to give back to Indian cricket.
“That’s a huge commitment. I don’t think he’s keen on it. Coaching is a difficult job. It keeps you just as busy, if not more, than when you were playing. With a family to consider, you might reflect on having spent your entire life doing the same thing, constantly on the move,” Chopra said.
“That’s why many players avoid coaching, and even when they do, it’s usually just a short two-month stint during the IPL. But becoming a full-time Indian head coach means committing to 10 months of the year,” Chopra added.
Meanwhile, Dhoni, who captained Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, admitted that the team had weaknesses, which led them to finish at the bottom of the points table for the first time. He mentioned that they would look to address these issues during the IPL 2026 mini auction.
