Former England skipper Alastair Cook remains optimistic about England’s chances against India despite their defeat in the second Test in Vizag. India secured victory in the match, leveling the 5-match Test series by 106 runs. However, Cook sees the defeat as an opportunity for the Three Lions to capitalize on the vulnerabilities of their opponents.
The Ben Stokes-led England team found the 399-run target set by India challenging, and they got bundled out for 292 on Day 4 of the Test. Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin played pivotal roles, picking up 3-wicket hauls and bringing India back into the series. Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s double hundred in the first innings and Shubman Gill’s century in the second played crucial roles in setting up the monumental target for India.
Despite the loss, the England team received praise for showing resilience throughout the match, with contributions from Zak Crawley, Ben Foakes, and Tom Hartley. Cook, one of England’s greatest Test batters, believes that the key moments in the Hyderabad and Vizag Tests provide clues for Ben Stokes and his team to be hopeful about beating India in the upcoming matches in the series.
During a post-match analysis show for TNT Sports, Cook stated that India, considering their defeat in Hyderabad, would feel relieved after their victory in the second Test.
“India will feel a sense of relief primarily. They were facing significant pressure after the initial Test,” he said.
Cook highlighted that England’s disappointment stemmed from their batsmen’s inability to replicate the match-winning innings of Jaiswal and Gill for India.
“England’s defeat happened because none of their batters had a game-changing performance. That’s what they’ll reflect on. Scores between 30 and 70 don’t secure Test match victories. Despite coming close without any centuries, England will feel disappointed,” he added.
Cook also expressed that England would draw effective learning points from their defeat and repeat the same conclusion from the first Test. He believes that England can beat the Indian side again.
“England will certainly learn from this game. This Indian team is certainly beatable once more,” he concluded.
The third Test between India and England is scheduled for 15 February in Rajkot, and Cook’s optimism sets the stage for an intriguing contest as both teams aim to gain the upper hand in the series.
