Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has failed as a captain when it comes to completing 20 overs in an alloted time frame. After missing the opening match against Chennai Super Kings due to slow over-rate offence in the previous season, he faced a similar issue in the contest against Gujarat Titans.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has fined him INR 12 lakh for his side”s failure to complete 20 overs in the allotted time against the Shubman Gill-led team at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The decision-makers have scrapped the rule of issuing a one-match ban for the captain if the franchise fails to complete 20 overs in time on three occasions in a season. Hardik was the last captain to be banned under the slow over-rate offence rule.
Meanwhile, Hardik’s return to the side was not fruitful for Mumbai Indians as GT defeated the five-time champions by 36 runs. Hardik Pandya was outstanding as a bowler, taking two wickets. However, he struggled with the bat, scoring 11 runs off 17 balls. Chasing 197 runs to win, the visitors managed 160/6 in 20 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav (48) and Tilak Varma (39) were impressive with the bat. For Gujarat, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took two wickets each.
Earlier, Sai Sudharsan (63 runs), Jos Buttler (39) and Shubman Gill (38) took the Gujarat’s total to 196/8.
