Lucknow Super Giants made light work of Sunrisers Hyderabad in match number 7 of the Indian Premier League 2025 season in Hyderabad. The win opened LSG’s account this season after a 1-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals in the previous clash. For the Sunrisers, they were well short of setting a big target on a dream batting surface. After beating Rajasthan Royals in their opener, SRH suffered their maiden defeat.
Batting first, SRH posted 190/9 in their 20 overs. The hosts were pegged back, losing Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan for cheap scores to be reduced to 15/2. A 61-run stand between Travis Head and Nitish Reddy helped SRH resurrect their innings. However, Head was dismissed at a crucial phase of the contest. SRH started to build again but lost Heinrich Klaasen for 26 runs. Thereafter, Reddy too perished for 32. Aniket Verma’s 13-ball 36 and Pat Cummins’ 4-ball 18 helped SRH get to 190.
For LSG, pacer Shardul Thakur took a solid 4-fer. He was instrumental in helping his side not let SRH get past 200.
In the chase of 191 runs, LSG saw a record franchise partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran for the 2nd wicket. Pooran’s brute force and Marsh’s tenacity saw LSG get to 120 in the 9th over itself. Cummins dismissed both batters as LSG were reduced to 138/3. Cameos from Rishabh Pant (15), David Miller (13*) and Abdul Samad (22*) helped LSG win in just 16.1 overs.
Here are 3 heroes and 3 zeroes from the SRH-LSG contest in Hyderabad.
Heroes
Shardul Thakur: The Indian pacer was unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction and then joined LSG, who replaced the injured Mohsin Khan with Shardul. After taking two wickets in SRH’s opener against DC, Shardul was brilliant against the powerful SRH side. He ended with 4/34 as mentioned. Notably, he bowled as many as 11 dot balls. It was Shardul who dismissed opener Abhishek Sharma and then Ishan Kishan off the very next ball. His next two victims were in the form of Abhinav Manohar and Mohammed Shami. Notably, Shardul reached 100 IPL wickets with this 4-fer. This was his 2nd four-wicket haul in the IPL and his best performance. He also became the seventh player with a four-wicket haul for LSG in the IPL.
Mitchell Marsh: The Impact Sub of LSG delivered with the bat once again. After smashing a fine 72 versus DC in LSG’s opener, Marsh hit a solid 52-run knock versus LSG. He was part of a 116-run stand alongside Pooran for the 2nd wicket. His 31-ball knock had 7 fours and two sixes. He struck at 167.74. Pat Cummins dismissed Marsh in the 11th over. By then, LSG were already on the front foot. With this knock, Marsh surpassed 4500 runs in T20 cricket. He has raced to 4549 runs at 32.03. This was his 28th fifty (100s: 1). In 44 IPL matches, Marsh has 789 runs at 21.91. This was his 5th fifty in the IPL.
Nicholas Pooran: After slamming a whirlwind 75 versus DC in the previous clash, Pooran was once again in his element. This time he struck a ferocious 70 off just 26 balls. He hammered 6 sixes and 6 fours, striking at 269.23. He was the chief architect in the century-plus stand with Marsh and helped LSG stay ahead of the asking rate. Notably, Pooran got to his fifty from just 18 balls. As per Cricbuzz, for the 4th time Pooran got to a fifty in the IPL in less than 20 balls (highest). Pooran struck the fastest 50 in IPL 2025 and also it’s the 2nd quickest for LSG behind his own 15-ball effort vs RCB in Bengaluru, 2023. Overall, Pooran now owns 8787 runs in T20s. This was his 53rd fifty. In the IPL, he has scored 1914 runs (50s: 11).
Zeroes
Ishan Kishan: Hero in SRH’s IPL 2025 opener against RR with a magnificent ton and now a zero in his 2nd game. Kishan came in at number three for SRH when they were 15/1 in the 3rd over and he perished for a first-ball duck. A Shardul Thakur delivery was loose down the leg side, Kishan looked to glance the ball away and it hit his bat to go behind with Rishabh Pant completing the catch. Kishan will feel gutted that he didn’t dispatch the loose ball and got dismissed on the contrary. His wicket left SRH in a pickle at 15/2.
Aiden Markram: After falling for a score of 15 versus DC, South Africa’s Aiden Markram bit the dust once again. This time he was out for just one run from 4 balls. A Mohammed Shami ball was hit straight to mid-off. This was a soft dismissal for the experienced Markram, who couldn’t keep a length delivery outside off and his drive on the rise led to a catch at mid-off. Markram will need to resurrect his approach and hope he comes with a positive frame of mind in LSG’s next clash after two straight failures.
Simrajeet Singh: The pacer failed to make any sort of impact in the contest for SRH. He came to bowl in the 3rd over and was hit for a four off the very first ball. He was then hammered for two sixes in the over by Pooran, who saw the ball sail over the rope after dispatching his length balls outside off over long-on and deep mid-wicket. 17 runs came off Singh’s 1st over. He was then brought back in the 12th over and his first ball was smacked for a six by Pant. And then Badoni hit a four as well as Singh was demolished for 11 runs. In his 2 overs, Singh conceded 28 runs and went wicketless.
