According to former Australian captain Ian Chappell, England possess several dangerous young batters who could pose a significant challenge to the Australian team during the 2025-26 Ashes series. Chappell highlighted that players like Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Zak Crawley have the potential to cause major problems for the hosts.
In his ESPNcricinfo column, the South Australian commented that the inclusion of Jamie Smith has bolstered England’s batting lineup. Chappell also believes that if all-rounder Ben Stokes can find consistency with the bat, England will become a formidable opponent.
“England now has an explosive batting unit, strengthened by the addition of solid wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith. Key threats for Australia include Joe Root, whose exceptional talent could pose problems, as well as the hard-hitting Zak Crawley and Harry Brook, known for their aggressive play and ability to score rapidly.
If Ben Stokes regains his batting form, he too would pose a significant challenge, especially given his return to bowling and ability to take crucial wickets,” wrote Chappell.
Chappell emphasized that England must find ways to cheaply dismiss Australia’s lower-order batsmen, rather than relying solely on bouncers. He further stressed that holding onto catches will be just as crucial.
“Having a complete lineup of healthy fast bowlers at his command in Australia would give Stokes a significant push. However, he should focus on dismissing lower-order batters through effective, varied bowling, rather than over-relying on a constant barrage of bouncers. While England may be more accomplished than the inexperienced West Indies, they cannot assume their opponents will simply wilt away,” he added.
“England must select the right players, ensure their fast bowlers deliver, and capitalize on their chances in the field if they hope to win the Ashes in Australia,” he stated.
