Harry Brook, England’s new white-ball captain, had opted out of the Indian Premier League 2025 a week before the tournament. Delhi Capitals bought him, and his decision was not taken lightly by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He was banned from the cash-rich league for two years. DC mentor Kevin Pietersen, who played for England, was disappointed with Brook’s decision. Pietersen broke his silence on the matter.
He discussed the batter’s weaknesses against spinners and how he needs to concentrate if he wants to improve.
“I told him, I was like, ‘Dude, I’m gutted that I can’t work with you for a few months, I believe he’s incredibly talented. You don’t hit one ball over extra cover and then the same delivery over midwicket unless you’ve got serious talent,” Pietersen said on ESPNcricinfo.
“However, he finds it tough to score runs in the sub-continent, especially India. I wanted to help him, but everyone makes their own choices, and you have to respect that. He struggles against spin in India. I would have worked with him for two months in IPL, but it didn’t happen,” he added.
Pietersen also reflected on his coaching style: “I would’ve approached it the same way I did with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root early in their careers. Root, of course, has gone on to become England’s best player of spin ever.
“I’m not saying our sessions were the sole reason for his success, but we did spend a lot of time together in the nets working through drills, practising, and growing. That aspect of the game is something I truly enjoy.”
Delhi Capitals are placed fifth in the points table and are set to take on SunRisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday, May 5.
