“He took his team to the final is senseless”: Indian bowler opposes the idea of giving T20I captaincy to Shreyas Iyer

Sandeep mentioned that IPL is a domestic league and comparing it with international cricket is not right.

India fast bowler Sandeep Sharma is not in favour of Shreyas Iyer replacing Suryakumar Yadav as the team’s T20I captain after the PBKS skipper led his franchise to the IPL 2025 final. Iyer also captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in IPL 2024.

Before that, he was the skipper of the Delhi Capitals, and the franchise made it to the final in 2020. In the 18th season of the tournament, he scored over 600 runs at an astounding strike rate of 175.07. Despite his performances, Iyer was not selected for the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to be played in T20 format.

“The debate that Shreyas Iyer took his franchise to the final is senseless,” Sandeep was quoted as saying by Crictracker.

“Surya is not leading any franchise, but he is the captain of the Indian team. Rohit Sharma hasn’t led a team in IPL for the last three years, but he led India in T20Is and is still the captain in the fifty-over format. He was the captain of the Test team as well,” he added.

Sandeep mentioned that IPL is a domestic league and comparing it with international cricket is not right.

“IPL is different and is a domestic league. When you pick an international squad, you need a captain who can manage 15 people. In the IPL, you have domestic and young players. Some of them are overseas cricketers. However, in international cricket, you need someone to manage 15 people in a better way.

“It is senseless to debate what Iyer has done in IPL. These two teams are different. The Indian team is a different team, while the IPL franchise is a different franchise. I feel people should know the difference between the Indian and IPL teams.”
