Former Indian fielding coach R Sridhar said that the BCCI’s decision to give the T20I captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav and not Hardik Pandya was the right move. Hardik was India’s vice-captain during their successful campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States of America and the West Indies.
However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, gave Suryakumar the captain’s armband. According to Agarkar, Hardik has been battling fitness issues and doesn’t play consistently, while SKY has no such problems. Sridhar felt that SKY was the deserving candidate.
“Surya will play all the matches for India, and he is not bothered by workload management. This was enough to convince the decision-makers.
“He also captained India in some of the matches during Rohit and Hardik’s absence. The BCCI has confidence in Suryakumar Yadav,” R Sridhar told Hindustan Times.
R Sridhar also highlighted Suryakumar’s stint as vice-captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders and his leading the Mumbai Indians in a couple of matches during the IPL in 2023.
