“Follow Joe Root, not Bazball”: Mohammad Kaif gives important suggestion to England after Champions Trophy exit

England lost all the three matches in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa defeated the Jos Buttler-led team. Former India player Mohammad Kaif has slammed the English team for their below-par performances despite some of the leading ODI players in the squad.

England failed to defend 351 runs against the Aussies, while Afghanistan registered an 8-run win. In the third and final game, the Proteas clinched a seven-wicket victory. Butter stepped down from white-ball captaincy after the last contests and now the onus will be on head coach Brendon McCullum, who hasn’t been able to assemble a winning squad in the shorter formats.

McCullum has done wonders with England in Test cricket but his aggressive approach in the fifty-over format and T20Is has back-fired.

Earlier, India won the five-match T20I series 4-1 against England. In the ODIs, the visitors lost all the three ODIs. With failures in the 2023 ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, the decision-makers are likely to take action against the non-performers. Kaif also came up with a suggestion.

“England’s early exit once again proves ‘one nation, one style’ doesn’t work. You can’t blindly follow Bazball across formats. Successful teams win as they adjust to conditions. Follow Joe Root, not Bazball,” he wrote on X.
