Mohammed Shami has been bowling in domestic cricket, but the Indian team management hasn’t asked the BCCI or the selectors to send the speedster to Australia for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. According to reports, the medical team hasn’t given a fitness certificate to the pacer, and there is a possibility of him not playing even one Test in the series Down Under.
Captain Rohit Sharma was asked about Shami’s current status and why he hasn’t been given go-ahead for the red-ball matches in Australia.
“Door is always open for Mohammed Shami. The medical team of the BCCI is monitoring his progress. He once again suffered from a swollen knee in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. We don’t want him to travel to Australia and then break down due to any reason.
“We will have to make sure that he is able to handle the pressure of Test cricket as he hasn’t played international cricket for a long time. We are in touch with the BCCI on his recovery. We will have to see how his body reacts after four overs of bowling and twenty overs of fielding.
“We will not push for his return and wait for the clearance from the medical staff,” Rohit Sharma told reporters.
Shami last played for India in the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
