Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar made a significant remark about India’s wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel after their defeat in the third Test against England. India came up 22 runs short at Lord’s.
Chasing a target of 193, India were dismissed for 170, having given away 32 extras in England’s second innings total of 192, which turned out to be a pivotal factor. Since Jurel was involved in some of those extras, Manjrekar questioned whether he should be held solely responsible. Jurel had come in as a substitute for the injured Rishabh Pant.
“Can we really criticise Dhruv Jurel too harshly for the extras? He stepped in as a stand-in keeper. He appears far more assured when keeping to spinners and standing close to the stumps, much like many Indian wicketkeepers,” he mentioned on ESPN Cricinfo.
Manjrekar also reflected on the events at the end of Day 3, which seemed to fire up England and their captain Ben Stokes. He further pointed out a tactical blunder by Shubman Gill, who delayed bringing Washington Sundar into the attack during England’s second innings.
“Introducing Washington Sundar late in the second innings may have resulted in India conceding 30-40 runs,” he added.
Sundar claimed four wickets as England were dismissed for 192.
