The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a crucial decision following the stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations. RCB defeated Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the final to win their maiden IPL trophy.
The final was contested at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday, June 3. RCB landed in Bengaluru on June 4 to celebrate their victory with the fans. However, the call to hold the celebrations turned tragic as 11 people lost their lives, with several injured as a result of a stampede.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the board has no right on franchise celebrations, but the apex body will issue an advisory to avoid such incidents in the future.
“The incident is unfortunate, but we don’t want to play the blame game. The BCCI organizes an award presentation ceremony after the final, but from now on, we will come up with an advisory to prevent such incidents,” he was quoted as saying by News18.
When India won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, an open bus victory parade was held in Mumbai.
“When BCCI organizes a celebration, we take care of everything. We took some time for the T20 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai before proceeding with the plans. In RCB’s case, it was done within hours, and I think that was the difference,” he added.
