Avesh Khan replaces Mohammed Shami in Test squad after five-wicket haul against South Africa A

Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the two-match Test series even before the first game started, but the BCCI didn’t announce his replacement there and then. However, after facing a crushing defeat in the first game, Avesh Khan was instructed to join the team in the Island Nation.

The second and final Test will be played on January 3, 2024, at Newlands in Cape Town.

Avesh played a part in India’s ODI series win against South Africa, taking six wickets in three games. He has claimed 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at an average of 22.65.

Avesh is currently representing India A in a four-day match against South Africa A. He took 5 wickets in the first innings as the hosts were dismissed for 263.

Rohit Sharma spoke about the lack of support other bowlers offered to Jasprit Bumrah in an innings and 32-run defeat.

Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna were the pacers, while Ravichandran Ashwin was the only spinner in the squad. “We gave away too many runs in South Africa’s only innings. We can’t depend only on Jasprit Bumrah; other bowlers are also needed to perform. Bumrah was good throughout the game. He wanted a bit of support from the other end, which didn’t happen,” Rohit Sharma said after the game.
