Overview:
Iyer represented the Men in Blue in 51 T20Is and scored 1104 runs at an average of 30.66 with eight fifties.
Ravichandran Ashwin is shocked by Shreyas Iyer’s snub for the Asia Cup 2025. Ajit Agarkar, the head of the selection committee, announced the 15-member squad, with Shubman Gill returning as vice-captain.
However, despite his performance for the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2025, Iyer was not given a chance. His last T20I appearance was against Australia in 2023, and since then, the decision makers haven’t shown interest in him.
“Shreyas Iyer has been brilliant and made us win the ICC Champions Trophy. If you say that Shubman Gill is in form, then Shreyas Iyer hasn’t done anything wrong with the bat. Who will answer all the questions about him? What wrong has he done?” Ashwin asked.
Ashwin also mentioned his contributions for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS).
“He did brilliantly for KKR and made them win a title. He went back into the auction and took Punjab to the final. He has solved his issues against the short ball and hit Jasprit Bumrah and Kagiso Rabada for big shots in the IPL. I am sad for him and Yashasvi Jaiswal. It is not fair,” he added.
Selectors are not looking at Shreyas Iyer: Abhishek Nayar
Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar didn’t like the selectors’ move to keep Iyer out of the side.
“He is not even in your top 20 and I am unable to understand the reason. I am not talking about 15 but the 20 players you picked for the Asia Cup. It is clear he is not there in the scheme of things,” Nayar said on Star Sports.
Iyer represented the Men in Blue in 51 T20Is and scored 1104 runs at an average of 30.66 with eight fifties. In the 18th season of the tournament, he scored 604 runs from 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07.
