The ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has faced numerous logistical challenges and pitch controversies. Additionally, persistent rain has hindered the tournament’s progress. According to ESPNCricinfo, South Africa has fallen victim now. A small private aircraft’s failed landing at Barbados’ Grantley Adams airport has stranded the entire South African squad, their families, commentators, match officials, and ICC representatives at the Trinidad airport.
The airport in Barbados was briefly closed due to inspections by the Barbados Police Service and the Civil Aviation Authority. Just moments before their scheduled departure, the pilots received notification of the runway closure in Bridgetown.
The South African team, along with commentators and officials, were informed that the rescheduled start time was tentatively set for 4:30 PM local time – amounting to nearly a six-hour delay. By now, the team has reached Barbados.
Corporate Communication Specialist with GAIA Sharleen Brown stated, “The private aircraft’s landing gear failed to deploy, but the plane landed safely on the runway at Grantley Adams International Airport.”
The three individuals on board, which consisted of two passengers and the pilot, were all reported to be unharmed.
On Thursday, South Africa cruised to a dominant nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan, reaching to a World Cup final for the first time. Chasing a modest target of just 57 runs, the Proteas swiftly reached 60/1 in only 8.5 overs, with Reeza Hendricks (29* not out) and Aiden Markram (23* not out) steering them to an unbeaten finish.
The South African bowling attack decimated Afghanistan, bowling them out for just 56 runs in 11.5 overs, with Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen taking three wickets each. Now they will look to carry on the momentum in the final against India, who are also undefeated in the tournament.
