AB de Villiers refuses to accept Shreyas Iyer’s strategy for England Test series

In a recent interview, Shreyas Iyer, the middle-order batter for Team India, expressed his intention to adopt an aggressive approach in the upcoming Test series against England. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers responded to Iyer’s plans, emphasizing that a solely positive mindset might not be suitable for red-ball cricket.

De Villiers shared his perspective in a YouTube video, acknowledging Iyer’s entertaining style of play while expressing reservations about the approach.

“I really enjoy watching him on the field. He’s all set to approach the England Test matches with a positive mindset. I don’t agree much with the idea that you should always play positively, regardless of the situation. That’s not how Test cricket operates. However, he’ll understand it on his own as he gains more experience,” he said.

Shreyas Iyer’s recent performance in the two-match Test series against South Africa did not leave a substantial impact, with just 41 runs across four innings. Consequently, he has not been included in the squad for India’s ongoing three-match home T20I series against Afghanistan.

“In Test cricket, batting positively all day isn’t possible. Mentally, stay positive, and adapt to situations. You must earn the right to play aggressively, something Shreyas will learn with more Test experience,” he added.
