Aakash Chopra gives his verdict on Gautam Gambhir’s likely sacking as head coach if India fail in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025

Aakash Chopra said that it is doubtful that Gautam Gambhir would be removed from the position of India’s head coach in Tests if the team failed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. He mentioned that it would be premature if the new coach was shown the door.

India lost 0-3 against New Zealand in a three-match Test series, and since then, stories of the BCCI pulling up Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma have been doing the rounds. Rumors suggest the apex body is thinking of appointing separate coaches for white-ball and Test formats if the Australia tour doesn’t go as planned.

Aakash Chopra discarded the reports of Gambhir being removed as the head coach in Tests.

“I read somewhere that Gautam Gambhir was grilled for six hours by the BCCI. Even Rohit Sharma was there. A lengthy discussion on the performance of the players and the reason behind the rank-tuners was held. There are also reports that Gambhir is going to get sacked if India don’t do well in BGT. We will have different coaches in different formats. So soon?” he said.

“These rumors are baseless, and they have been committed with malicious intent. It doesn’t happen that you remove a coach or appoint separate coaches for different formats if the players are not doing well. I don’t agree with these stories. It is too early, so I am discarding that,” he added.

India will face Australia in five tests, with the first game starting on November 22 in Perth. The Indian National Cricket Team must win the series 4-0 to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
