Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has identified Mohammed Shami as a key player for India in the upcoming T20I series against England. While reports suggest Shami faced hamstring issues during practice, Chopra urged caution about their reliability. India will play five T20Is, starting January 22 in Kolkata, with Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana included as specialist seamers.
“I’m not sure why Shami went off, but it’s been reported that he did, though now he’s back. The spotlight will be on him, especially with Bumrah’s fitness still uncertain. We’re all looking at Shami for this series, as he’s been out of the game for quite some time, having played only a few domestic games since the World Cup final,” Chopra added.
“A reporter mentioned that I had said something, while Ajit Agarkar supposedly said something entirely different. There were even claims that Ajit had stated our primary wicketkeeper-batter was Rishabh Pant, not KL Rahul. However, after double-checking, we realized Ajit never made such a statement. Despite that, the rumor spread so much that it began to seem like it was a fact,” Chopra continued.
“I’m not sure why Shami stepped out, but it’s reported that he’s back now. All eyes will be on him, especially since Bumrah’s fitness remains uncertain. Shami’s performance in this series is crucial, given how long it’s been since he last played. After the World Cup final, he’s only participated in a handful of domestic matches,” Chopra explained.
“Domestic cricket can never really be a true measure of someone like Mohammed Shami. Even if he’s not at his best in domestic matches, a player of his caliber can still pick up wickets and bowl the necessary number of overs,” Chopra pointed out (9:40).
“However, what’s crucial is the pressure. Without the pressure, things tend to go smoothly. It’s the pressure that causes hamstring injuries, missteps, and mistakes. Shami will face the international cricket pressure for the first time, and that’s when things can become challenging. But his skills are unquestionable,” Chopra concluded.
Chopra highlighted that the T20Is and ODIs against England serve as a precursor to the Champions Trophy. He emphasized the importance of these matches for Shami, noting that strong performances would leave Bumrah’s fitness as India’s main concern.
