Kolkata Knight Riders have majority of their core coming into the 2025 Indian Premier League season. This is a massive plus for a side who are well coached and have variety in their ranks. The Knights named seasoned Ajinkya Rahane as skipper and Dwayne Bravo as a mentor. So this seems to be pretty interesting for everyone rooting for the Eastern giants.
KKR did miss out on a few star names like Shreyas Iyer, Mitchell Starc and Phil Salt, but they have managed to pull themselves out with decent replacements. Champions KKR, who have won the illustrious trophy on three counts, could be backed as one of the favourites.
They retained six players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction to give us a primary look at their main playing XI. At the IPL 2025 auction, KKR bought back most of their players, barring 4-5 important names. It’s a group which is settled and the owners didn’t do anything fancy to make wholesome changes rather they have stuck to a winning team.
The mega auction saw the Knights break the banks to sign back Venkatesh Iyer. Once KKR missed out on Shreyas, they perhaps identified Venkatesh as the player who could lead them. He came in for a whopping INR 23.75 crore. It will be a crucial season for the Madhya Pradesh player to showcase his credentials as a potential leader. Venkatesh did well for the Knights last season especially during the Qualifier 1 and final.
KKR have their core set of players and the addition of seasoned figures such as Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje make them a solid side that can threaten teams. KKR will be counting on consistent performances, as seen last year. The bowling is what needs to strike out and if they match the standards set last season, a promising campaign would then await them.
Here, we analyse 5 reasons why KKR can win the IPL 2025 title, in addition to naming their strengths and weaknesses.
Top-quality retentions, which form the core
KKR retained a total of six players heading into the auction. This almost forms more than 50% of their playing XI. You have the two West Indies legends in, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, who had an excellent 2024 season as all-rounders. The IPL legends will be banked upon to deliver for a side they have spent plenty of time with. Harshit Rana has elevated himself as a Team India recruit. He was superb in the Champions Trophy and was also excellent for the Test side in Australia. In Varun Chakravarthy, KKR have a world class spinner, who has had brilliant campaigns which in turn helped him to get into Team India. He comes from a successful CT 2025 campaign. In Ramandeep Singh and Rinku Singh, KKR have two well-oiled batting firepower. Both can finish off matches and are top-fielders. They are also part of India’s T20I set-up.
A dream spin partnership in Varun and Narine

Chakravarthy and Narine guarantee KKR 8 overs of brilliance every game. The former was the 2nd-highest wicket-taker last season and the most successful spinner. He was one of India’s tournament winners in the Champions Trophy. A wicket-taking bowler, Varun also showed his might for India in T20Is against South Africa and England, which resulted in him getting a ticket to the Champions Trophy. Narine, with his magic, will be immense. Apart from his wickets, he does the role of containing opponents well. This is a sound partnership, and it has gone from strength to strength, which augurs well for the three-time champions.
Well thought decision on captaincy and vice-captaincy

After seeing Iyer get snapped up by Punjab at the auction, KKR went all out for Venkatesh, a player they wanted to remain loyal to. Venkatesh is someone KKR feel can be the face of this side in years to come. They also didn’t overload Venkatesh with captaincy duty, given his price tag, but named him deputy. He can take the leaf out from Rahane and prepare himself as a future skipper. What KKR did at the auction was to identify someone who can bring calmness and leadership. They got Rahane in at his base price. Rahane, who has plenty of experience and teeth in the IPL, will be a soothing captain. He led Mumbai to the SMAT 2024/25 title, scoring a truckload of runs himself. Rahane will be hungry to perform well both as a batter and captain. He has led teams in the past in IPL.
A strong base and bench strength

KKR have their base well-covered thanks to getting the core players. 8 of their starting XI belongs to last season. So players know the task they will be handed. With Salt gone, the experienced Quinton de Kock is likely to open, but you also have reliable Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has been with KKR for the last couple of seasons. He shone for KKR in the final last season after Salt’s departure. Raghuvanshi, who has done well when handed chances, lends his voice from the bench. He can be KKR’s batting impact player. Manish Pandey is another name KKR can fall upon in batting if needed. Another known name is Anukul Roy, who has often donned the spin Impact Player role for KKR. Mayank Markande adds depth in the spin department.
A side with all-round delights

KKR have always banked on all-rounders and this season is no different. Narine and Russell are the powerhouses in this side. Russell brings in that quality as a middle-order finisher. He also presents you with wickets. Ramandeep can be utilised well in this regard too. Apart from being a finisher, he can bowl handy overs. Anukul is a floater but will mainly be used as a third spin option. On the bench, the experienced Moeen Ali gives KKR a shield. He was a quality buy from KKR’s perspective. Rovman, primarily a finisher, can give you a few overs of pace. So here’s another effective player they have.
Weaknesses of KKR

KKR’s pace bowling has its challenges. With Starc gone, Spencer Johnson comes in as the left-arm quick. But can he fill the void? Anrich Nortje is a terrific fast bowler, but he comes with challenges in the form of injuries. KKR also saw Umran Malik get ruled out, with Chetan Sakariya replacing him. So what it does mean is that KKR need Rana, Vaibhav and Russell to do well. The pace bowling is a tightrope to walk for at KKR.
Strengths of KKR

Rahane has a massive opportunity to showcase his mettle. He has been in good form as both a batter and skipper. Rahane must identify his best position and score quality runs to keep KKR afloat. Importantly, KKR have a strong captain and this bodes well.
Verdict of KKR

KKR need to execute what they did so well last season. With most of the same personnel on offer, KKR are well stocked and credit the management for being smart. Chandrakant Pandit has a tough task given there is no Gautam Gambhir. KKR’s season can be defined regarding how they start their season. The first 4-5 games will give us an idea. However, they look better than several other sides and can be contenders for top 4.
