De Villiers, former captain of South Africa, raised concerns about the Indian team’s decision-making, questioning what influenced the decision to rest Bumrah in this way
AB de Villiers, the legendary South African batter, expressed his surprise at the way Jasprit Bumrah’s workload is being managed, comparing it to the method used for Dale Steyn, who was rested during less significant series to ensure he was fit for the key Test matchups. Jasprit Bumrah, India’s top fast bowler, will participate in only three of the five Tests in the ongoing series against England, a series named to honour Anderson and Tendulkar.
After India’s defeat in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, reports suggest that Bumrah will be unavailable for the second Test, which is set to begin on July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
“He is the best bowler in the world across all formats at the moment. So, it’s really challenging to figure out how to give him a rest,” AB de Villiers mentioned on his YouTube channel.
“However, in my view, Test cricket is the highest form of the game. And I believe this Test series would have been the ideal one to prepare him for all five Test matches,” he added.
“That’s what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). We’d rest him during less crucial T20 and ODI series to ensure he’s fully prepared for the major Test series against teams like Australia, England, and India, especially when playing away. New Zealand to some extent, depending on the rankings at the time,” he added.
De Villiers, former captain of South Africa, raised concerns about the Indian team’s decision-making, questioning what influenced the decision to rest Bumrah in this way.
“I’m not sure if it was mismanagement or if, having just returned from injury, he saw the IPL as a sort of warm-up phase. Maybe he went to the surgeon, who advised him, ‘You can’t play all five Test matches.’ So, you have to respect that, and ultimately, it’s up to Team India to manage him properly,” he mentioned.
“It doesn’t get any bigger than this, guys, except perhaps for the WTC final,” he concluded.
