ICC takes action against Rishabh Pant

Overview:

Pant crossed the line with his conduct during England’s first innings and was found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

India’s wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant was officially reprimanded by the ICC for showing dissent towards an umpire’s ruling during the third day of the opening Test against England. Despite his remarkable batting display at Headingley, where he scored centuries in both innings, Pant crossed the line with his conduct during England’s first innings and was found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Pant didn’t commit any offence in the past 24 months, but due to this incident, one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record. “Pant was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to expressing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during an international match,” the ICC said.

The incident took place during the 61st over, with Harry Brook and Ben Stokes at the crease. Pant questioned the umpire over the condition of the ball, but the official refused to replace. Rishabh showed his frustration by throwing the ball.

As Pant accepted the penalty proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The incident was reported by the on-field umpires, Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, as well as third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Mike Burns.

For Level 1 offences, penalties range from a formal reprimand to a fine of up to half of the player’s match fee, and the addition of one or two demerit points.
