“Gautam Gambhir is the best thing to happen to Indian cricket”: Yograj Singh

Yograj Singh said that Gautam Gambhir is the best thing to happen to Indian cricket. He commented on the podcast of former Punjab cricketer Taruwar Kohli. Gambhir is the current head coach of the Indian team and played a key role in the team’s success in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“Gautam Gambhir is an excellent person. I think he is the best thing to happen to Indian cricket. You won’t get another person like him. When you do well, you get praise, but when you fail, the criticism follows you,” he said.

Yograj added that Gambhir would be successful as a coach if he is given a free hand.

“He will get success, but you need to give him a free hand. He didn’t remove Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but told them to play Ranji Trophy matches. Every player should play in red-ball tournaments in India. Once you become a big player, you start relaxing. That shouldn’t happen till you retire. Sachin Tendulkar played until 42.”

Gambhir started his coaching tenure with a win over Bangladesh. The team also won a T20I series in Sri Lanka but lost the ODI series. The sub-continent team failed in red-ball matches against New Zealand and Australia, putting a lot of pressure on the head coach. But the success in the Champions Trophy has secured his place. Gambhir’s next assignment will be the five-Test series in England.
