Kwena Maphaka, at just 18, has already made a significant impact in South African cricket. In the ongoing SA20, he’s rubbing shoulders with cricketing stars like Joe Root and David Miller, impressing with figures of 2/35, including the key wicket of Aiden Markram.
Despite his early success, Graeme Smith has stressed the importance of nurturing Maphaka’s development. Smith, who serves as the league commissioner for the SA20, believes that Maphaka’s natural ability should not be over-coached.
“He’s an exceptional talent, and I appreciate that he’s a natural. Allow him to grow, learn, and develop at his own pace,” Smith remarked. A born wicket-taker like him is something every team values.
Maphaka’s bowling action, which has drawn comparisons to Jasprit Bumrah, is another defining feature of his game. With a high jump, rapid arm swing, and a quick release, Maphaka regularly clocks speeds of 140-145 kmph. However, this unique action could lead to injury risks over time, as noted by Smith. Despite these concerns, Shaun Pollock urges against comparing Maphaka to Bumrah, emphasizing the importance of allowing him to evolve.
“I wouldn’t burden him with the expectation of turning into a Bumrah. Being 18, he needs the freedom to develop and flourish,” Pollock expressed
As Maphaka continues to shine in the SA20, his future looks bright. His captain at Paarl, David Miller, has high hopes for the young pacer, saying, “He is a special player. For now, what he’s got is great.” Maphaka’s rapid rise is also being closely followed by cricketing legend like AB de Villiers, who hints that Kagiso Rabada might already be mentoring the teenager, setting the stage for an exciting career ahead.
