“Stop signing players from local T20 leagues”: Sunil Gavaskar blasts franchises for playing undeserving cricketers in IPL

Former India player Sunil Gavaskar slammed franchises for signing and playing undeserving cricketers in the Indian Premier League. He commented after IPL 2024 final between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. The title was won by the Shreyas Iyer-led franchise.

The batting unit of the Sunrisers couldn’t get going and several young Indian batters played reckless shots, resulting in their downfall. SRH were bowled out for 113 and the KKR completed the chase in 10.3 overs.

Speaking after the contest, Gavaskar launched a scathing attack on teams.

“The teams are making big mistakes of signing players who don’t deserve to play in the Indian Premier League. The undeserving cricketers are not only impacting the standards but also failing to contribute.

“Franchises will have to realise and understand that these players can’t play in the tournament. They are being paid hefty amounts and when they come to IPL, the performance levels go down significantly. They can perform in local T20 leagues but not in IPL.

“There is no need to sign any players from Rajasthan League, Gujarat League, UP League and other competitions,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
